Mechanical design engineer

Turning a requirement into a drawing somebody can manufacture. It is the broadest role a mechanical degree leads to and the one that transfers furthest outside engineering.

What the work actually is

You take a need, decompose it into functions, generate concepts, choose between them defensibly, and then do the unglamorous majority of the work: tolerances, fasteners, material selection, and the fifteen revisions after manufacturing tells you the part cannot be made that way.

Good design engineers are distinguished by how early they involve manufacture. A part that is elegant and unmakeable is a failure, and learning that takes most people a year on the job.

You will own drawings, so geometric dimensioning and tolerancing stops being an exam topic and becomes the language you argue in.

What prepares you

Engineering design is the method course and it needs only linear algebra, so it fits in the third-year fall. Theory of machines is what lets you specify a mechanism rather than copy one. Mechanics of solids 2 is the sizing. 3D printing and plastic parts is where design for manufacture becomes concrete.

The part a page cannot give you.

What the interview actually asked, which team is worth joining, who to talk to. That comes from people who have done it, which is most of what the club is for.

This is our reading of where a mechanical degree goes in Israel, written from the course content and the shape of the local market. It is judgement, not data. We do not have interview questions, salaries or hiring numbers, and we would rather say so than invent them. If you have sat one of these interviews, tell us and the page gets better.
