Algorithm engineer, from mechanical engineering
The crossing point from mechanical engineering into software and algorithms. It is the highest-leverage career move available in the degree and the least advertised.
What the work actually is
You work on the models rather than the mechanism: perception, sensor fusion, predictive maintenance, control from data, or the physics-informed side of machine learning. Companies want people who understand the physical system the data came from, and that is precisely what a mechanical degree provides and a computer science degree does not.
Condition monitoring is the clearest example. Knowing that a bearing fault shows up as a sideband at a specific multiple of shaft speed is domain knowledge, and it is worth more than another engineer who knows the library better.
You will write considerably more code than your classmates, and you will need to be genuinely competent at it rather than a MATLAB user.

What prepares you
Data structures is the single highest-leverage elective in the catalogue for this, and it is the one that gets your CV past an automated screen. Computational intelligence gives you the methods pointed at physical systems. Signal processing and DSP are what make vibration and acoustic data tractable. Dynamics and control gives you the state-space language the whole field borrows.
