Thermal engineer, electronics cooling

Keeping silicon cool. In Israel this is arguably the highest-paying direct application of a mechanical engineering degree, because it sits inside the semiconductor industry rather than beside it.

What the work actually is

You own the temperature of a chip that nobody is allowed to let throttle. That means resistance networks from junction to ambient, heat-sink and fin design, airflow through an enclosure, interface materials, and increasingly liquid cooling and heat pipes as power density climbs.

The work is a negotiation. The electrical team wants more power, the mechanical team wants less volume, and the reliability number moves exponentially with temperature. You are the person holding the Arrhenius curve.

It is unusually cross-disciplinary for a mechanical role: you will read datasheets, argue with package engineers, and spend as much time in measurement as in simulation.

The course chain

In the order worth taking them. Each one links to what it covers, when it runs and what it needs first.

What prepares you

Thermodynamics 2 then Heat and mass transfer are the spine. Thermal design of electronic equipment is the course that names the job, and Advanced thermal design is where you learn the tools the industry actually runs. The CFD lab is what makes you credible on the simulation half.

The part a page cannot give you.

What the interview actually asked, which team is worth joining, who to talk to. That comes from people who have done it, which is most of what the club is for.

This is our reading of where a mechanical degree goes in Israel, written from the course content and the shape of the local market. It is judgement, not data. We do not have interview questions, salaries or hiring numbers, and we would rather say so than invent them. If you have sat one of these interviews, tell us and the page gets better.
